If you are purchasing a new smartphone, chances are that it will run on either Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android platform. The good news is that both operating systems work excellent and have a lot in common with each other. But, there are also some key differences that you need to take into account if you are considering buying a new phone and want to pick between the two platforms. Here’s a look at how the operating systems compare against each other.
iPhones have always cost more than comparable Android phones, but the iPhone X, which was priced at $1,000, took things to a whole new level. And, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which starts at $1,100, is one of the most expensive smartphones on the market. You can also find more affordable options, but these are few and far between. The iPhone 12 for instance, starts at $800. The most inexpensive iPhone is the SE (2020), which starts at $400. While Apple has continued to expand its range, we don’t think they will go any lower than $400.
Android, in comparison, has a lot more variety and scale. So, while you can get the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G for $2,000, you can also get smartphones for as low as $100!
There are about 2.7 million apps on the Google Play Store and 1.8 million on the Apple App Store. But, numbers may not be a good metric here because most of us only need a handful of apps – and these are typically available for both platforms. But, the best mobile games usually come first to iOS, so that’s something you’ll want to consider.
To be honest, Apple Maps did not have the best start, but it has improved substantially in recent times. That said, most people who have an Apple phone still download Google Maps to their devices. But, while Google Maps has an advantage right now because it has a larger database of businesses and reviews, we think Apple will quickly catch on.
Apple offers timely and consistent updates and security patches. You don’t really get the same experience on Android unless you purchase a Pixel smartphone or a device running Android One. That makes iOS the clear winner here.
Which Should You Choose?
Ultimately, it’s not about which platform is better than the other; it’s about which one is better suited to your budget and requirements. So, take the above-mentioned points into account when making your decision.
